Florida schools are now back in session, meaning your children are no longer home under your watchful eye. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to remember some safety tips to ensure your child makes it to and from school safely every day.

Here’s a quick checklist to keep in mind, what your children should be doing to stay safe at school.

Transportation

If traveling by car:

  • Always obey the speed limits, especially in school zones.
  • Buses that are picking up or dropping off students should never be passed.
  • Keep a watchful eye on the back-to-school walkways, particularly in school zones.

If traveling by bus:

  • Take your children to the bus stop so that they are aware of its location and become familiar with the process.
  • Children should not be closer than six feet from the curb to give them adequate safe space, away from traffic.
  • Introduce your child to the bus driver so that you know who they are.

If traveling on foot:

  • Always walk on the sidewalks unless crossing the street. If there is no sidewalk, children should walk against traffic, not with it.
  • Always look both ways before crossing the street, and only stick to designated walkways when possible.
  • Become familiar with the crossing guards in the school zones, and don’t cross until traffic is fully stopped.

If traveling on a bicycle:

  • Walk your bicycle across the street.
  • Always wear a helmet and bright clothing for visibility.
  • Stay in bicycle lanes and ride on the side that goes with traffic.

Safe at School

  • Backpacks should be comfortable and worn properly. Never carrying too much weight.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry, this can cause injuries while playing on playgrounds.
  • Becoming acquainted with teachers and staff, so you know who to contact in the event of an emergency.
